Agnes
Agnes’ Story
Born into a family facing financial hardship, she watched her mother struggle to provide for her and her sister after her parents separated. Frequent evictions, domestic violence, and the burden of unpaid school fees were part of her reality. Despite these challenges, Agnes refused to let her circumstances define her future.
At 13, she moved in with her uncle, hoping for stability, but instead faced mistreatment, overwork, and emotional distress. The immense stress took a toll on her health, leading to hospitalization for stomach ulcers. It wasn’t until her grandparents stepped in that she finally found some relief. Though they had little, her grandfather became her biggest supporter, doing everything possible to ensure she stayed in school.
Now, thanks to the GLOW Scholarship, Agnes is pursuing Mathematics and Computer Science at Multimedia University, turning her passion for problem-solving into a pathway for change. She is determined to challenge gender stereotypes in STEM, stating:
“I want to change the community perspective that girls can't be part of the science team and the way they view girls as weaklings in the technology world. I also enjoy solving mathematical problems and equations. I am so passionate about mathematics and would love to further my understanding in the field of science and technology.”
Beyond her studies, Agnes is already giving back. She volunteers with CodeYetu, a program founded by one of GLOW’s mentors, where she teaches young children how to code. Through this initiative, she is not only building her skills but also inspiring the next generation of innovators.
From a childhood filled with struggle to becoming a role model in STEM, Agnes’s journey is proof that with determination, support, and opportunity, anything is possible. She is not just studying science—she is shaping the future of technology for young girls in her community.
