Cultivating Change Through Sustainable Farming
At the GLOW Foundation, we believe in empowering our recipients to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. Today, we are proud to share the inspiring story of Jane, one of our scholars, who has turned challenges into opportunity in her slum community.
In a community where everyday expenses weigh heavily on families, Jane has started a humble yet impactful farming project that has not only put food on her family's table but also set them on a path toward sustainability.
Rooted in Perseverance:
With no land of their own to cultivate, Jane and her mother saved for three years to lease a small piece of land just outside their home from a neighbor. This modest plot became the foundation for their garden—a vital source of fresh organic produce.
"When we started, our main goal was simple: to ensure there's always food on our table," Jane shares. For a family accustomed to struggling to afford nutritious meals, growing their own vegetables was a game-changer. "We used to buy the same vegetables repeatedly, in small amounts. It wasn't enough for us, nutritionally or financially," she adds.
Empowerment Through Farming:
Jane's approach to farming goes beyond sustenance; it is about empowerment and forward planning. "I realized that by growing enough crops, we could eat fresh and varied vegetables and also sell the surplus to save money on groceries," she explains. This dual-purpose strategy not only secures their food supply but also generates a modest income from vegetable sales.
Her advice to fellow young people resonates with practical wisdom: "Be creative with your side hustles and be open-minded about doing some 'dirty work.'" For Jane, this "dirty work" involves cultivating kales, spinach, onions, and pumpkins. Despite her academic success as a Community Health student, she finds solace and purpose in tending to the crops whenever she's home.
Eyes on the Future:
With an eye towards expansion, Jane plans to introduce sheep and goats to the farm. Her market research has revealed a high demand for these animals, coupled with their relatively low maintenance requirements. "The profits from selling sheep and goats will fund my younger brother's high school education," she shares with pride.
