Purity’s Story
Growing up, Purity and her mother were abused by her stepfather. They were often thrown out of the house in the middle of the night along with a newborn baby, with nowhere else to go, they would spend the night out in the cold. In the long run, it was Purity who helped her mother to leave the abusive marriage and move on.
Purity spent much of her time around her aunt and cousins. She has great admiration for her aunt who works three jobs just so she can provide for her kids with autism. If it wasn’t for her aunt’s college degree in accounting, she wouldn’t be in the position to care for her children as she is today, leaving a lasting impact on Purity on the importance of a college education.
As Purity grew close to her two cousins with autism, she discovered her passion to bring change to how children with autism are perceived. She looked after her cousins when they were isolated from society because of their outbursts and aggression. This is what ultimately opened Purity’s eyes to the need for support for autism in her community and motivated her pursuit of education. Purity believes that by following her dreams, she will be better placed to help her family out of poverty.
Though Purity’s family wasn't able to support her through college, GLOW’s scholarship has enabled her to pursue her dream of studying medical engineering. Purity’s favorite part of her course is that she gets to understand how the human brain works. She particularly is interested in the development of a humanoid robot that helps people with autism identify with their emotions, eye gaze boards that help with eye contact and speech synthesizers.
