Mary’s Story

One of the most impactful moments of Mary’s life occurred when a fire erupted in her community killing many residents and leaving hundreds of others homeless. When Mary discovered that the fire could have been prevented with proper infrastructure, she was burdened to do more and bring change. From that day forward, she made it her life goal to avoid such catastrophes and led her to study engineering. Mary’s education became fueled by her passion to support others. She has achieved academic success as valedictorian of her class, scoring in the top .05% on her national exam in Kenya.

Originally from a small-scale farming community with very limited means, Mary did not see education as an option for her. Now, as a GLOW scholarship recipient, Mary has been able to excel in the university’s engineering program with high hopes for the future. Mary dreams of starting a “Youth for Society” program in her home village after she establishes a successful career in International Electronics.

There are two kinds of people, those who dream and never wake up to live their dream and those who dream and wake up every morning to make their dreams come true. I want to actualize my dreams. My dreams always motivate me to wake up each day because I have something I want to see at the end of all this. I want it to be said that I had a purpose which I lived to achieve and that someone will thank God that I was born because I impacted their lives.

Education is important to Kenyan girls because we need to stand up and stand strong. Here in Kenya, you can only be a leader if you have a degree. We need women to be involved in so many things including politics, education, and protecting the environment.
