Daki

Daki’s Story

No matter her struggles, Daki always keeps a positive attitude while handling conflict with grace. When she was a young girl, Daki was forced to endured the torture of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and became an outcast in her community when she refused child marriage. Daki has also been a victim of robbery many times, causing her to carry everything she owned on her back. She has spent most of her youth overcoming her father’s abandonment while caring for her mentally-ill mother.

Jeni and Daki during after her initial interview

I went through a lot of tough moments since I was very young. I acted as a mother and child at the same time since my mother was mentally challenged. At the time, I never realized it was a hardship because I had a lot of challenges that lowered my self-esteem. My father passed and left the family in a very bad situation and no one could provide meals for us. I went through Female Genital Mutilation. This also molded me to be who I am today because from this experience I am doing my best to reduce the harm (of FGM).
